About
KASM
KASM brings together Kiwis from all walks of life - we're tangata whenua and tauiwi, coasties and city-dwellers, fishers and environmentalists, surfers and scientists, young and old. We're ocean lovers who won't stand by while seabed mining companies threaten our moana. Together, we're building a movement to protect our ocean from seabed mining for generations to come.
Our mission
KASM works to raise awareness about seabed mining proposals in Aotearoa and share information about what's at stake for our oceans. Our goal is to ensure New Zealanders understand seabed mining plans and what they mean for our marine environment, so they can stand up for its protection.
Together, we show our government that Kiwis don't want seabed mining - we want our future generations to inherit healthy, thriving oceans.
What we do.
-
Connect and empower people who care about protecting our oceans from seabed mining
-
Inform communities about proposals and their impacts
-
Challenge seabed mining applications through the courts and consent process
-
Present evidence to government and councils about the impacts of seabed mining
-
Support people to have their say in official processes
-
Work alongside experts to understand and share the science
-
Build partnerships with iwi, fishing industry, and environmental groups
Who we are
We're your neighbors, local business owners, parents, and ocean lovers. KASM started in Whāingaroa / Raglan when surfers, fishers, mana whenua and the wider community realised the threat seabed mining posed to their beloved coastline.
Today, we're a nationwide community working together to protect our marine environment from seabed mining.
We are a non-political, non-profit organisation, funded by membership subscriptions and donations, whose opinions reflect wider public sentiment.
